Owner, Dad and Artist: Zack Steele
With a background in residential remodeling, Zack has always dabbled in creating wood projects. Trying something new with the epoxy resin craze turned those everyday pieces into functional art.
Using locally sourced and other materials sourced sustainably from Oregon and California gave Zack the opportunity to build the brand while also using some of the finest species around. From different species of walnut to highly sought after redwood, juniper and olive wood. No two pieces are exactly alike yet have the character to compliment each other beautifully.
About the Company
Officially, the company SteeleGrain started in 2018 with pallet furniture and iron pipe, then quickly onto epoxy resin. Taking what is normally firewood and creating a functional conversation piece for clients and friends to enjoy for years to come is what gives the drive to create.
Locally sourced wood comes from mainly the Louisville metro area as well as Shelby, Bullitt and Oldham counties. The trees aren’t just taken down just to cut them down, they come down for many reasons. Once the tree is fell, it is hauled off to the mill then the kiln drying process starts. Roughly 9 months to 2 years later, the trees return to begin their journey into tables, etc.
Not all of the projects are commissions. A lot of them are just trying something new, something that blends nature and science. That shows in the meticulous care for each piece because it is my hard work and heart that goes into every piece.
